Students of the Cross River State University of Technology have raised the alarm
over the growing menace of admission racketeering in the institution calling on the
state government to come to their rescue and save the reputation of the young
institution. Cross River Watch spoke with several of the students who for fear of
victimization appealed that their identities should be concealed.
One of the male students in the department of engineering told us that “admission into CRUTECH is
not kind of easy to some candidates, and as a matter of fact, I have come to realise
that intelligent and bright students don’t get admission easy, but blunt and dummy
students get admission so easily, now, my question is why is it so? I believe that
questions should be answered by some admission officers in this school who do sell
eligible candidates admission to those that have the capital to finance it, why is
it that state government don’t want to look into this corruption?
A female student told a particularly notorious lecturer still in his late thirties
whose usual refrain is “I don’t care what you scored in JAMB, you either pay in cash
or in kind”. Asked whether she paid her way in cash or kind into the school, she
said she had to pay in cash because she was tired if staying at home when all her
younger ones were almost graduating.
A aged woman who sells consumables at the Ogoja campus of the school also told Cross
River Watch how she had to pay money to some lecturers to buy a slot for her
daughter during the last round of admissions.
All attempts to speak with some lecturers of the university failed as all those
contacted directed all enquiries to the public affairs department of the school or
the vice chancellor. But off record, they denied knowledge of such acts going on in
the school. Although one of them confirmed that he has also been hearing about the
money-for-admission racket but has not seen any incident to convince him that it is
true.
