Retirees under the United Local Government Service (ULGS) have called on the Government of Cross River State to come to their aid as the health of most members is deteriorating due to irregular payment of their entitlements that should help them to cater to themselves.

The association also announced its preparedness to take their eye care sensitization campaign to the local councils and disclosed that the association has procured 200 eye lenses to be given out free to some of the retirees who are now suffering sight defects.

Arising from a meeting of the association held at Bekwara Local Government headquarters, Abuochiche, the association said the concern of its members is paramount to it after their 35 years of meritorious service to the state.

While speaking on the need for the sensitization, the State Chairman of the Association, Comrade B. Okosin said the campaign for retirees has become necessary due to the inhuman treatment local government pensioners have been subjected to in the state.

He expressed delight at the turnout of Local Government Pensioners from the three senatorial districts, stressing that the Association will take the sensitization to all the eighteen local government areas of the state.

Okosin said over 200 eye lenses procured by the association for its free eye program exercise were not enough for those with eye problems, a development he said show clearly that there are many retirees with eye problems.

He commended the State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke for his health care program for Cross River State, pleading that retirees need to benefit more from the Tulsi Chanrai foundation eye care program packages for the services rendered to the state and country during their productive years in service.

The pensioners in separate interviews said they are being neglected by the State they served meritoriously and called on the governor whom they described as ‘caring’ to assist them.
