I cannot imagine the grovelling sycophancy that has become our politics in recent times in Cross River State.
I wonder aloud how some people will go to the extent of endorsing the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Liyel Imoke as the Senator for the Central Senatorial District for the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for next general election when the man has not even indicated any interest in seeking nomination of his Party, the Peoples Democratic Party for the seat!
Wonders they say shall never end! Early this week a supposedly political interest group known as Cross River Political Network, CRISPON purportedly endorsed Senator Imoke as the next Senator to represent the Central Senatorial District of Cross River State in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria come 2015.
This is the brand of mindless, sycophantic and undemocratic brand of politics we have seen these past 15 years of democratic civil rule particularly in Cross River State that is responsible for the stagnation of social development in the State.
I agree that there is nothing wrong in endorsement of candidates for elections by individual (s) and other civil society groups in a democratic society but such endorsement must be after the candidate has shown interest in contesting or after such candidate has been nominated by the political party that is sponsoring him after a passionate appraisal of his credentials and manifestos or the suitability of such a candidate.
However to endorse somebody who has not told anybody that he wants to run election is preposterous and amounts to putting the horse before the cart.
It is ridiculous to the extreme. It is this brand of politicking that is somewhat responsible for our politicians taking us for granted and being arrogant and not accountable to the electorate.
In any case it is the electorate that will eventually determine who will be the Senator to represent the Central District of the Cross River State not the whims and caprice of some people or group of persons who are desperate to attract attention.
