College of Education, Akamkpa Introduces Aptitude Test For Students Union Leaders

The management of Cross River State College of Education Akamkpa has introduced aptitude test for all students intending to lead the Students Union Government, SUG either in the parliamentary, executive or judiciary arm come 2014/2015 academic session.

The aptitude test which was written in the college compound recently was supervised by the Dean Students Affairs Unit, SAU Mr. Utum Ina.

The Dean in an interview with CrossRiverWatch after the aptitude test revealed that the new method is born out of the college management’s desire to improve the performance of the student’s union leaders whose past and present cadre has performed badly, academically and otherwise.

His word: “Performance is the index of leadership; good leadership should bring good performance likewise bad performance. After Laban (the first SUG President of the College) we had a downward performing student’s leadership which made us introduce this new method that will bring quality persons to lead the SUG, persons who can communicate very well, and be a reflection of the motto of this institution that is teaching for excellence”.

Proving his point further he maintained that, “The bottom line is that we want performing student’s union leadership, looking at it from the perspective that you grow from here to lead outside the school”.

He added that the aptitude test does not change the electoral process but will add value to the process, “and we hope to add value every other year”, Ina said.

According to him, “Students will begin to know that to be a student union leader you must be a performing person, this means that they will sit up, their Cumulative Grade Point Average, CGPA will improve and it will reflect when they further in other institutions”.

The Dean also revealed that about a hundred intent forms were printed, 80 picked but only about 70 returned because they intending aspirants heard of the aptitude test.

He informed that the result of the aptitude test will be out in less than 7 days and those with the required average will be allowed to contest.

  • i am very proud of my school and also proud of the Dean. Of student affairs Utum Ina for his effort towards the upkeeping of the students. I also appreciate the provost Mr. james Bassey Ejue for his ability to carry the college along, also for not alowing the education of the college to be compromise in any were.
