The Senator representing Cross River State Southern Senatorial district in the National Assembly Senator Prince Bassey Otu today dumped the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, after announcing his resignation from the party.

Addressing a crowd of supporters at the Margaret Ekpo International airport Calabar where he arrived few minute before 6pm today, Senator Otu expressed his displeasure at the way and manner the PDP, his former party conducted her entire primaries.

After denouncing his membership from the PDP the platform that gave him his first tenure in the Senate and his previous representation at the House of Representatives he said the party is now “against peoples will”.

He further declared his ambition to run for a second term but stopped short of naming his new party.

He however promised to begin consultations tonight and wished all his supporters a merry Christmas and prosperous new year ahead.

Despite the Senator’s hesitation at disclosing his new party, the Chairman of Labour Party in Cross River State, Mr. Austin Ibok told CrossRiverWatch earlier in the week that Senator Otu was billed to declare for Labour party today in an open ceremony in Calabar which however could not hold for undisclosed reasons.

2 commentsOn Senator Bassey Otu Dumps PDP, Declares For 2nd Term

  • My comment on this story was undergoing moderation for days. Then it was not published. The thrust of my comment was that loyalty to the voters should supersede loyalty to a political party. That politicians who decamp from a party that is rife with irregularities and does not provide level playing field for aspirants to political office are indeed showing their loyalty to the voters rather than their own selfish interests. Unless this comment was being moderated by a PDP operative, I do not see why it should have been moderated to “death”.

I will not be surprised if this gripe is also not published or is also moderated to death too. I believe comments by readers constitute a healthy cross fertilization of ideas and a barometer of people’s reactions to issues that affect the public good.

Moderation and censorship are not synonymous.
