The Nigeria Police in Calabar this evening confirmed to CrossRiverWatch that there was an attempted assassination on the People’s Democratic Party, PDP Southern Senatorial District flag bearer Mr. Gershom Bassey.
The State police public relations officer, Mr. Hogan Bassey who spoke to CrossRiverWatch on telephone said gunmen attacked the home of the politician but the assailants were stoutly resisted by the policemen on guard.
CrossRiverWatch gathered that the incident took place on Friday and Chief Gershom Bassey narrowly escaped as the assailants did not meet him at home.
When CrossRiverWatch finally reached the State police spokesman, he said: “Yes, there was an attempt in his (Chief Gershom Bassey) house but the police resisted the gunmen. In the process, one of the policemen on guard was shot in the hand by the assailants and he is recuperating.”
Repeated attempts to speak with Gershom Bassey were not successful as calls to his phone were not taken but a close relative of the politician who spoke to our reporter under anonymity also confirmed the attack.
The source said, “It is true the assassins came in cars and upon gaining access asked of my uncle but unfortunately he was not back then, two mobile police security men stationed at the gate were both shot. One on his leg while the other was short on his buttocks but luckily no life was lost”.
Another source said the second person that was shot in the buttocks is a personnel of the Civil Defense Corps.
