The University of Calabar, has finally written to solicitors for Hon. Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, the Member representing Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives accepting that it was an error on the part of the institution that led to the wrong information that the lawmaker’s certificate was not genuine.
Dust had been raised about the authenticity of the lawmaker’s degree certificate from UNICAL after a letter emanating from the school Registrar, Mr. Moses Abang claimed that the certificate was not in the school records.
The letter was published by some online platforms but the Vice Chancellor of the University Professor James Epoke later told CrossRiverWatch that the Registrar’s letter was written in error and that Jarigbe’s certificate was genuine. I Have Seen Jarigbe Agom’s Certificate And It’s Genuine – UNICAL VC He also disclosed that the school was still doing further finding to trace his other results from year one and when they are done with that, the public will be informed.
Having concluded their findings, the Registrar of UNICAL, Mr. Moses Abang in a letter to Moses Ojua and Co., Counsel to Hon. Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, said the Head of the Department where the lawmaker graduated from did not avail him of all the information necessary to make the right judgment when the first letter was written.
“I make reference to our letter of 12th August, 2015 on the above subject matter. Based on new information available to us, I write to state as follows:
1. Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe could not graduate along with his set during the 1997/1998 academic session because he had some courses to repeat. This was not noticed by the Head of Department hence her letter to the Registrar dated 28th July, 2015.
2. He was to re-write the affected courses in a Long Vacation degree examination conducted for him during the 2003/2004 session.
3. He was graded and passed the examination and was eventually awarded a Second Class Honours Degree, Lower Division.
“Based on the aforementioned, the certificate presented by Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe is authentic.” The letter said.
It is not immediately clear if the lawmaker will still want to go ahead and press charges against the school for the embarrassment the mix up may have caused him.
