Plasma television sets, GSM phones and satellite decoders were among valuables carted away, weekend, by hoodlums from the home of late Gabriel Ogar, former Secretary to Cross River State Government, SSG, at the state Housing Estate Calabar.

The hoodlums, said to be about six in number, gained entry into the house located on Clement Ebri Drive, by breaking through the perimeter fence and cutting the iron bars that served as protector on the kitchen window at about 1.00a.m. on Friday night and attacked Madam Caroline Ogar, widow of the late SSG.

A house maid told our reporter that the robbers were armed and very hostile as they told the widow and everyone in the house to cooperate or get shot.

“They asked Madam for money but she told them she was a widow and had no money which made them very angry. Their leader said they did not care whether she was a widow or not and why would she not have money and live in a big house like this,” a girl who gave her name as Ipong, stated.

She said the robbers ransacked everywhere in the house in the hope of finding money but there was none which made them angry and decided to take away all the electronic items in the house.

“They took the plasma televisions in the sitting room, guest room and madam’s room along with all the phones they could find and threatened that when next they come if there is no money they would not take it kindly with us,” she added.

She said the former governor of the state, Chief Clement Ebri, under whose tenure Ogar served as Secretary to Government, had bought some doors to replace the ones the robbers broke and also fix the fence where the hoodlums destroyed.

Ms Irene Ugbo, Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State Police Command, said a report has been lodged by the woman but no arrest had been made.

  • The widow’s name is not Caroline but Josephine.

  • No, Ogar wasn’t SSG under Ebri’s administration. Gabriel Ogar served as SMG and Head of Service during the military era in the administration of Gen Dan Archibong. Pls correct your report.
