No fewer than 3 have been killed following renewed gangsters rivalries in the Ekpo Abasi area of Calabar South.

It is unclear what the current fight is about with gangster activities spiking shortly after the commencement of degree examinations in the state owned Cross River University of Technology, CRUTECH.

On Sunday, an unnamed youth was maimed by a rival group at Ekpo Abasi junction and died a few days later due to his wounds sources said.

Monday saw some students shooting in the air on campus following the completion of their examinations prompting unscheduled patrol by the ‘Operations Skolombo’ team stationed at CRUTECH gate.

A student (names withheld) suspected to be a member of the Klans Confraternity was dragged out of the male hostel 2 at about 8:29 PM on Tuesday by rival Baggars confraternity and was saved by an electricity pole when a machete lifted to maim him hit the pole leading to him sustaining only a cut.

A few students were arrested that night by the ‘Operations Skolombo’ team after the victim yelled for his colleagues who came and chased the rivals away.

On Wednesday, another was shot dead along New Airport road in Ekpo Abasi at close range. It is still unclear whether it was a gangster activity as his body is said to have been badly bruised with suggestions that he might have attempted stealing.

Also, an attempted public transition in leadership by members of the Baggars confraternity was aborted in front of female hostel 3 following the arrival of a combined team of the ‘Operations Skolombo’ and the school’s security team which led to their flight.

Thursday morning saw students coming to school through the sports arena popularly known as ‘Pavilion’ meet the corpse of a popular students called “Liberty” with gun wounds and machete cuts.

Sources say Liberty was pursued by his rivals from the Visual Arts Department to Pavilion where he was shot thrice and then macheted upon discovery by his assailants that the bullets were causing him no harm.

CrossRiverWatch findings reveal the atmosphere around the institution is currently tense with students staying away from night classes and rarely stepping out of their hostels unless when necessary.

However, the Governor, Senator Ben Ayade Thursday paid a visit to the school and promised an increased security presence in the institution following the kick off of the newly created Department of Homeland Safety and Security.

The governor also made a ten million Naira donation to the students.
