Large crowds gathered in Ikom, central Cross River State on Saturday, December 29 2012 afternoon to behold the scene of a twenty two year old girl, Felicia Ndon, who allegedly committed suicide by drinking a pesticide, gamalin 20, following a misunderstanding with her aunt, Agnes with whom she was living with.
The girl who wrote the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination in SSCE, May/June 2012 at the Government Secondary School, Ikom was a long standing maid to Agnes who said she is the younger sister to the father of the deceased.
“She had been living with me since she was three when her father died and I have been treating her as my daughter”. Agnes said amidst wails.
The girl was said to have taken offence when her aunt scolded her for coming back late from the market. “I did not do anything to her o. I just threw an empty water jog on her for over staying in the market and she ran away”.
Agnes told our reporter that she thought Felicia had gone to the house or somewhere around the Ikom Motor park where she always assisted her in serving food in a restaurant “but she went straight and bought gamalin 20 and went to the house and drank it”.
She said it was when the girl failed to come back after about an hour that she sent one of the girls staying with her to look for her and when she got home “she saw Felicia lying on the floor and she called me and I rushed home and immediately took her to the hospital but it was too late”.
The body of the dead girl which was wrapped in a native mat and put in the boot of a golf car with her legs dangling outside was taken to Obubra their home town for burial.
When crossriverwatch asked if she reported the incident to the police before taking the girl for burial in the village, she retorted. “Police go wake am up?”.
One of the sympathizers who were also shedding tears profusely said the lady was always kind to her niece and wondered why the girl did what she did. “na manipulation be dis. Everything na Felicia, everything na Felicia. Dis new year wey dey come so Agnes don buy am cloth even say dem dey three girls wey dey stay with am and she never buy for the others”.
