The Minority Leader of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Alex Irek (ACN, Obubra) has vowed that his party will win over some local government councils from the PDP in the forthcoming local government elections in the state.
Hon. Irek who is the only opposition member in the twenty two member house told crossriverwatch that the Action Congress of Nigeria which is presently going through a leadership crisis is set to resolve its internal problems in preparation for the local council elections expected to hold by August 2013.
Hon. Irek said: “ACN is the alternative platform to PDP in Cross River State. We are presently having a crisis of leadership, but we are working closely with the national leadership of the party to see how that is resolved on time in preparation for the local government elections.
“Even some members of the ruling PDP who are already jittery about the fact that they may not get tickets in their party are already looking in our direction and we know that they will still be an implosion within the ruling party as the primaries draw close and some of the aspirants will look for alternative and credible platforms to pit their tents. By the time we finish the rebuilding of the party, we will harmonise all these opportunities I have enumerated and I can assure you we will take some of the local governments back from the PDP”.
Hon. Alex who said he does not belong to any of the two factions of the ACN in the state said, “As the only elected member of the party in the state assembly, I see myself as a unifying factor so I cannot belong to any faction. My interest is to see how this issue can be resolved so that the party can move forward”.
He also called on the warring parties to sheath their sword and see how the party can harness its strength and win more grounds in the state in future elections.
Cross River State is one of the few states in the country that have consistently conducted local government elections as constitutionally stipulated since 1999 with caretaker committees not lasting more than three months at any time.
