Immigration Arrest Student in Calabar For Armed Robbery

The Cross River State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service yesterday arrested a final year student of the College of Education Akamkpa for alleged armed robbery.

The command also arrested 10 illegal immigrants in Calabar, the state capital.

The State Comptroller of immigration, Barrister Samuel Ogwiji while briefing newsmen in Calabar said that the
Monitoring and Surveillance team he set up carried a raid in the state capital and arrested the illegal immigrants who were mainly from Republic of Mali and other neighbouring countries.

Ogwiji said that about four persons suspected to be armed robbers were sighted by his men in an uncompleted building near Atekong Street, Calabar early hours of Wednesday but three ran away when confronted but one was unlucky that he was arrested.

Explaining how the suspect was arrested, the officer in charge of Surveillance, Prince Ben Inyang, said that while on official duties, they sighted the group in the uncompleted building and in an attempt to run away luck ran out of the victim.

Inyang said the suspected armed robber will soon be handed over to the police for prosecution while plans were on the way to repatriate the illegal immigrants to their respective countries.

In an interview, the armed robbery suspect and final year student of the department of Mathematics from Etung Local Government Area of the state claimed that his friend invited him for a club outing in Calabar and that he never knew what he was into before the security agencies picked him up.

The suspect who gave the name of his friend as Fabulous from Ebonyi state also claimed that he is the only son of his parents.
