Youth Corper Drowns in Ikom, Decomposing Body Found

The remains of the Youth Corper Miss Faith Nzube Enemuo who drowned in Ikom river of Cross River on Sunday January 20, 2013 was found 7am on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 by Okuni River, about 14km from where she drowned after two days of frantic search.

When our reporter arrived the scene, the corpse had already been removed and was laid by the beach and had started decomposing.

The Police Area Commander was also on ground, consulting with other youth corpers and villagers and making arrangement to convey the remains to Emeka mortuary at Okuni.

The Okuni Community Youth President Mr. Emmanuel Nsor Alobi, narrating how the corpse was found said the youths of the community were already on the alert after being contacted by the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in the Area command of the sad event and on the possible passage of the corpse on their beach.

He said at the early hours of 7am that morning a river side sand excavator Mr. Pius Ogbonanya while going about his usual business saw the corpse floating past the beach when he called him and he in turn notified the DPO.

He added that by the time the police and the Ikom NYSC coordinator arrived, the corpse has been removed by him with the assistance of the sand excavator.

Speaking, the Local Inspector, NYSC, Ikom Zone, Hon Ekerette Judah Udoekpo regretted the incident and said the corpse will be deposited at the mortuary in Okuni while awaiting directives from the regional coordinator on the next step to take.

He further charged youth coppers serving in the state to be well behaved to avoid similar occurrence in the future.

Also speaking the Coppers Liaison Officer, NYSC Ikom Zone, Danjuma Zira Khaly while also regretting the incident narrated that at least 10 corpers where at the beach as at the time the incident took place.

According to eyewitness, Miss Enemuo drowned while trying to rescue the handball they were playing together with the other coppers.

Search efforts to find the corpse with the aid of local divers did not yield result until that morning when they received a call on the third day that the corpse has been found by the Okuni River.

One of the corpers who was among the ten corpers that were in the beach at the time of the incident took place, Gidofot Ifeanyi declined comments telling our reporter that he had been under pressure for information since the sad incident took place and was tired of answering questions.

Late Miss. Faith Nzube Enemuo is a native of Nanka in Anambra State serving with the Ikom Local Government Council under Batch C with registration number CR/12c/068 after graduating from the University of Abuja where she studied Social Studies.
