The Senator representing Cross River North Senatorial District in the National Assembly,Senator Ben Ayade, has condemned moves by members of the Obudu Legislative Council to impeach Emmanuel Ikwen, the Chairman of the Local Government.
In a telephone interview with crossriverwatch this afternoon, Senator Ayade said: “I cannot destroy what I built. Emma is my product so I cannot be part of what will bring him down. Those who know me know that I don’t play that kind of politics. That is not my political style. I condemn any attempt by anyone to impeach the Chairman. And tell it to everyone that even if he were impeached, I will go to any length to make sure he is reinstated.
“He must complete his tenure. But he should however not allow his quest for second term make him abandon his political family. He should know that with all that I did for him, he should still have the sanity of looking at history and remember how he got to where he is. The PDP in the state does not play that kind of politics. Whatever happened should be seen as a disagreement between the same political family and should be resolved within the family.
I totally disagree with the notion of impeachment.”
They have been allegations that Senator Ayade paid the Secretary of Obudu Local Government Council, Mr. Ken Akla, Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Ugar Andeshi and the Deputy Leader, Hon. Martin Orim the sum of two million Naira to facilitate the impeachment of the Chairman.
But the Senator vehemently denied the allegation and described it as laughable.
Members of the Obudu Legislative Council had threatened to impeach the Chairman yesterday because of a controversy rocking the council over the Chairman’s request for N6m overdraft to procure an award of excellence from a company in Abuja.
Meanwhile, there are speculations that an emergency meeting of the Exco of the council has been called by 5pm tonight at the council.
According to a text message from the Vice Chairman of the Council, Hon. Agnes Atsu that is now being circulated round, the meeting will discuss matters of urgent importance.
But sources opposed to the Chairman say the meeting is called to remove the Secretary of Council, Hon. Ken Akla who is being accused of sabotaging the Chairman.
