One of the leading opposition candidates in the February 28, 2012 governorship election in Cross River State, Mrs. Ima Nsa-Adegoke has said that lack of portable waters in Cross River State rural communities is on the increase.
Speaking with journalists shortly after the commissioning of water projects initiated by her foundation, The Ima Nsa Adegoke Foundation, TINAF, at Eseku, a suburb community of Creek Town in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, the Labour Party Gubernatorial candidate said, lack of portable drinking water in the rural communities has further impoverished the people of the State.
She said her foundation decided to embark on the project after thorough findings indicated that the community like many others; has problems of good portable water for over fifty years.
She said according to her findings a basic necessity of life like water is near-absent in the villages making the rural people prone to water-borne diseases.
“Can you believe that as close as this community is to the Creek Town where the political big men in Cross River came from, there is no water to drink not to talk of other uses in Eseku”.
Barrister Adegoke who described her entrance into politics as missionary said her choice of Eseku is to demonstrate to the people that politics and basic necessities are different.
“I had only nine votes in Eseku during the governorship election but right after the election, I approached the village head after my discovery that the community had problems of water which he confirmed that it was so for over fifty years ,this struck me and I promised myself that my foundation must do something about this.” She said.
She promised that her foundation will further embark on youth empowerment and values reorientation which she said is the most important in the lives of the young ones in the state.
“What Obafemi Awolowo did in the West is what we need in Cross River State. The people of the South West are informed and nobody can hoodwink them. They ask questions at any time and we must engage our youths on this value re-orientation.” She counseled.
On his part, the Secretary of Eyo Honesty the second dynasty of Chief Eyo Nsa Ekpeyong said the daily suffering of the people of Eseku has come to an end with the borehole.
Chief Eyo said for over fifty years, the people of Eseku have been suffering from lack of water a development that leaves many of the students in the community going late to school due to the distance to the nearby River.
He commended the Labor Party candidate for her interest in the people of Eseku community.
