The Cross River State Head of Service, HOS, Mrs. Mary-Theresa Ikwen has emphasized the need to acquire planning and research skills to improve productivity in the civil and public service. She stated this in Calabar while declaring open a 3-day workshop on Data Management and Analysis for Planning Research and Statistics.

The HOS stressed the importance of the workshop as a veritable avenue where states could derive the best of service for optimal performance.

“We must redirect our collective concerns to ensure that the people do not feel short changed in their expectations of that standard of service provided by Government institutions”, she said.

She said the long years of military rule has affected the level of productivity in civil and public services, pointing out that public confidence could no longer be guaranteed while sharp practices have become daily routine.

Mrs. Ikwen added that it was in response to this ugly development that the State Government initiated the idea of training and retraining its workforce to equip them for efficient and effective service delivery.

She urged participants to have a clear understanding of their roles as data managers, planning and research officers with a clear insight of the best practices in service delivery for efficient and effective data management.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Management Development Institute (MDI), Mrs. Florence Offiong Ekefre described Government’s commitment to training of the various sectors of the Service as commendable.

She urged the participants to take the workshop seriously stressing that the era when workshops are treated with levity were over.
