Mr. Adeyinka Kola Sodipo, the Cross River State Commissioner of Police on Thursday read the riot act to those he called “bad eggs in the police” to have a change of attitude or be severely disciplined because he would not have such persons continue to dent the image of the police.
The Police Commissioner who was briefing newsmen on the activities of his command since his assumption of office three months ago said he had in the past three weeks undertaken a tour of police divisions in the command and “all I was emphasizing on has been on the image of the police and I can assure you that in the next three weeks there shall be tangible changes which you will all see”.
The CP said though the number of policemen in the country which he put at four hundred thousand was grossly inadequate compared with the United Nations requirement of one policeman to six persons, he insisted however that those on the job should discharge their responsibilities and duties with integrity because the law has imbued the average policeman with enormous power which should be used for the good of society not to abused through corrupt practices .
“As a young officer just out of police academy I was amazed when I looked at the back of my warrant and saw the enormity of powers that was in it and I knew that it was only God that can help me to discharge this power without abusing it”.
The police Commissioner said he has arrested twenty suspects including armed robbery suspects and cultists and recovered five vehicles snatched at gun point in the state capital.
He gave the names of those arrested to include David Effiong, Benjamin Bassey, Asuquo Wilson and Unyime Etim who with a locally made gun robbed one Andy Paul Ben of a flat screen television, one LG digital television and Sony speakers.
Other arrested include Abraham Asuquo of 8 Slaughter Road, 8 Miles for snatching a pathfinder jeep at gunpoint from one Udobong Tom Bassey .
“On the 2nd of April, 2013, our patrol team from State Housing Division responded to a distress call at Atekong Junction and arrested two young men who bought electronics from Ebuka Uba and asked the young man to follow them to their house for payment and on getting along the way one of them pulled out a locally made pistol and ordered him out of the car”.
Mr Sodipo said the police patrol team on rushing to the scene arrested one James Sunday while Otobong Effiong fled to the bush but was trailed by the police and arrested.
