Consequent upon the inter communal strife that rocked Nko and Oyadama communities in the central senatorial district of Cross River State in April which was exclusively reported by Crossriverwatch, Governor Liyel Imoke today, Monday announced the suspension from office of ten community heads in the area.
Giving reasons for their suspension, Senator Imoke said the perennial communal clashes in the two villages which always resulted in wanton killings and destruction of properties has become completely unacceptable.
The governor expressed sadness that the traditional rulers who are the custodians of traditional values and peaceful co-existence failed to control their subjects to refrain from the violence in spite of efforts by his government towards reconciling the two warring communities of Nko in Yakurr LGA and Onyadama in Obubra LGA who have been neck-deep in violence for several years now.
In addition to suspending them indefinitely, Imoke ordered that their certificates as traditional rulers be withdrawn immediately.
In a statement signed by his special adviser on chieftaincy affairs, Mr. John Eyikwaje, he not only condemned the incessant killings and violence but has frowned at the indifference of the traditional rulers stressing that they ought to have consolidated on government efforts to pacify their people.
The affected traditional rulers from Nko community in Yakurr LGA include: Richard Ubi Uket of Mkpollo/Ukpewen clan, Ogar Omini of Ikirele clan, Orem Akpama Mbang of Etombe eglige clan, Akpama Egbe Isokon of Okuri clan and Philip Effiong Effiom of Kedengha clan.
Other traditional rulers suspended and decertified from Onyadama in Obubra LGA are Eta Efoli Eke of Ebanakpai clan, James Obono Leko of Ekpawen clan, as well as the Obol Lopon of Nko, Obol Effiom Ayomobi and the village head
of Okorokpong.
