The increase in violence against journalists world over has been described as unacceptable with a call for journalists to close ranks and rise against the oppressors of those who seek justice and good governance.

President of the International Federation of Journalists, Jim Boumelha stated this during the opening session of the World Congress of Journalists attended by over 150 countries, including a crossriverwatch correspondent, in Dublin Castle, Republic of Ireland.

Our correspondent who is also attending the Dublin congress reports that, statistics available to the IFJ President’s office show that there is an increase in violence against members of the pen pushers family around the world.

He quoted the IFJ President as saying “Journalism is a social contract which practitioners choose as a profession to check the abuse of power by people in high places of authority over the ordinary people”

“There is hope because we preach democracy, we monitor democracy and we report democracy as journalists, but the anti democratic elements are seeing those who fought for their freedom as their enemies”

“As we converge here in Dublin, I charge us all again like I always do to be responsible journalists and work together in unison in ensuring that press freedom is guaranteed world over.” he said.
