The Nigeria Labour Congress NLC has urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)not to end the ongoing strike if the federal government is not ready to shift ground on its agreement it signed with the Union in 2009.
Cross River State Chairman of NLC, Comrade Njom Nyambi stated this during an interview with CrossRiverWatch in Calabar over the ongoing strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
Nyambi said “though strike is outdated in modern day demand techniques, it is the only language the Nigeria government understand for issues to be attended to. This is where we found ourselves.
The No. 1 worker in Cross River State said since the only way to get what Nigerians need from their government they elected into offices is through strike, the promise and fail syndrome of the government can always be put to check when all activities that directly affect them are grounded.
“Without strike government will not shift ground, without strike government cannot do anything for the Academic Staff Union of Universities. A situation where government agreed with labor unions and doesn’t fulfill does not augur well for the country.
“Strikes are not important again, they are outdated, but if somebody is provoked, the only option remaining in their case is strike because that is what the government of Nigeria understands.
“The only way to get what we need from government that we voted into power in Nigeria is strike, by the time unions go on strike it will affect all and sundry, the people who matter will be affected and they will sit up. Why is the Nigerian government promise and fail? Government should always work on agreements and things will work in Nigeria.
“Don’t forget the Newton law of motion which state that the body continue to be at rest on uniform motion until an extra forces act upon it, that is what is happening now.” he said.
