Cross River to Build Eye Hospital

The Cross River State Executive Council yesterday ratified the approval for the construction of structures at the State’s new Institute for Technology and Management.

The Council also ratified approval for the construction of a specialist Eye Hospital in Calabar.

The state under the administration of Senator Liyel Imoke runs a free eye surgery program in partnership with the Tulsi Chanrai foundation.

So far, about 30,000 free eye surgeries have been performed at the general hospital, Calabar. But facilities at the general hospital are being overstretched by the number of eye patients that flock into the state every day.

Presenting a memo before council, the state Commissioner for health, Professor (Mrs.) Angela Oyo-Ita said building an Eye hospital has become imperative as facilities at the General Hospital are being overstretched.

Meanwhile, structures to be built at the site of the new institute for Technology and Management include classroom blocks, hostels, residential quarters, internal roads, water and light.

Construction of the first phase is expected to be completed within a record-time of three months.

The institute, to be run by Highbury College Portsmouth, United Kingdom, is expected to commence academic programs in October.
