NPA Approves N45 Million For Bakassi Refugees

The Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, has approved relief materials worth forty five million Naira for the displaced Bakassi refugees who early this year were attacked by Cameroonian gendarmes in their Efut Obot Ikang village and are now quartered in St. Mark Primary School, Ikot Eyo in Akpabuyo in Cross River State.

Senator Florence Ita Giwa, a Director in the Nigerian Ports Authority, who visited the refugees on Wednesday said the NPA was moved by the plight of the refugees and decided to assist alleviate their situation by making the donation.

“The NPA in which I am a Director decided to make the donation after I made an appeal to them but right now the donation is being processed so I visited the camp to see how they are faring since the roof of the primary school they are staying had been blown off”.

Senator Giwa said the situation of the people is deplorable particularly with the incessant rains in Calabar and the roof of the primary school not in being place.

“I was greeted with placards by the people expressing their gratitude to the Cross River State Government but a lot more still needs to be done for the people especially by expediting action on their relocation to their permanent location.”

She said she made some cash donation to enable the refugees buy some immediate needs while awaiting the NPA donation which, according to her, would go a long way in alleviating their plight “I had to make some cash donation to them for their immediate needs especially food and drugs while the NPA donation is being processed”. Senator Giwa said.
