Elder statesman and Cross River State Chairman of the South South Peoples Assembly, High Chief Ambrose Akpanika has reminded the Cross River State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke that despite his effort to transform the rural populace in the State, there is an increase in the number of hungry people in the State.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with CrossRiverWatch, Akpanika said though Imoke has tried to remember that every town and cities of Cross River State started like a village by taking development to the rural areas, his findings have revealed that more people in Cross River particularly in the rural areas are hungry.
He said these people cannot boast of one square meal per day thereby making some of them to engage in immoral acts.
Akpanika urged the governor to beam his searchlight on the government ministries and agencies commissioned to provide economic and micro business opportunities for the rural dwellers to gauge their sincerity and rules of engagement they use.
He decried a situation where people who did not need such grants and interventions meant for rural dwellers are given for political patronage, family and relative affiliation which makes the level of poverty and hunger in the villages to remain perpetually on the increase.
He said politics of individualism is very rampant in the state rather than good governance and public participation.
“Imoke is good and he may have good intention to address the problems in the rural areas, but the people around him are very bad.
“They make the cost of governance to be more expensive due to their politics of individualism. They keep complaining of no money but all the political office holders and their PAs are riding posh cars in town, how do you reconcile that? He asked in a sober mood.
This act encourage laziness and discourage hard work because all young persons in Cross River State now want to be a politician without having any good handwork.” he said.
