The Chief Medical Director of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Dr. Thomas Aran and Cross River State commissioner of Police, Kola Shodipo have charged Journalists in Nigeria to embrace routine exercise as part of their schedule to keep them fit and sound on their job.
Speaking at the flag off of the maiden edition of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Cross River State Council ‘Media Walk’ at the U.J Eusene Sport Stadium, Calabar, the CMD said he was pleased to see what he has been telling the members of the Fourth Estate for years happening during his tenure as the Chief Medical Director.
He said the common saying that ‘Health is wealth’ should not just be heard and said but should be put into practice, stressing that many people are not taking their health issues seriously.
He explained that a greater number of diseases that trouble the body system can be averted if one engages in routine and reasonable exercise.
Agan urged the Union to sustain the effort, promising that he will continue to identify with journalists particularly in Cross River State due to their role in the society.
On his part, the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Kola Shodipo who commended journalists in Cross River State for their continued support since he resumed as the State Police Boss, said exercise is part of life which every human being should embrace.
He said his presence at the 8 kilometres media walk despite his tight schedule was to show his solidarity and support for the NUJ.
He urged journalists who he said plays an important role in the society to always cross check their facts before going to the press.
The Police boss reaffirmed his determination to always make Cross River State a near crime free State, even as he said the police cannot do it all alone without the support of the public and the press.
Earlier the State Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Ndoma Akpet said the Media Walk will be a monthly exercise to burn excess calories, stressing that the program was part of his campaign promises during the election of the Union.
Others who were at the eight kilometre walk which kicked off from Stadium through Mary Slessor Avenue to Marian, Effie Ette Round About to MCC and terminated at the NUJ Press Centre at 3rd Avenue include the Commissioner of Information Chief Akin Ricketts, his Youth and Sports Counterpart Patrick Ugbe and immediate Chief Press Secretary to Governor Liyel Imoke Mr. Omini Odein as well as other senior members of the Union.
