Following cases of involvement of personnel of the National Cadet Corps undergoing training in secondary schools in Cross River State in criminal activities, the Nigerian Army headquarters has banned the corps and all forms of military training in schools in the state.
A statement by Mr. Rekpene Bassey, the State Security Adviser to Senator Liyel Imoke, the governor of the state, cadets of the corps have, “resorted to using the military apparels which are part of their dress code to engage in criminal activities therefore the Army Headquarters has decided to ban all forms of military training in secondary schools”.
He called on all school heads, principals and the management of secondary education board in the state to ensure that training is stopped and the uniforms issued to the cadets are retrieved.
“These cadets could be recruited by criminal elements for unwholesome activities that threaten the security of the state” Rekpene added.
The State Security Adviser said the cadet uniforms which are similar to military uniforms have been prohibited in the state, adding that the current security situation in the country is precarious which anybody can take advantage of to perpetrate crime and violence in the society.
It will be recalled that some of the cadets were recently arrested for armed robbery while dressed in their training uniforms.
