A fatal road accident around 5pm this evening along Ikom/Calabar High Way at Adim in Biase LGA of Cross River State has claimed eight (8) lives on the spot while three (3) survivors have been rushed to a hospital at Ugep by policemen from the Biase Divisional Headquarters.

Eye-witnesses told CrossRiverWatch that a blue taxi conveying eleven passengers from Ikom/Obubra axis to Calabar was on its lane when a truck coming from Calabar axis in an attempt to avoid the deep craters on the road, left its lane into the opposite lane and had a head on collision with the oncoming taxi.

The eye-witnesses said several accidents have continued to occur at that particular spot recalling one very terrible one that happened on the 28th October, 2010 when a truck loaded with petrol caught fire and destroyed properties worth millions.

One of the persons who spoke to CrossRiverWatch, Mr. Ekpeni Anaba said: “The accident had happened just before we got there. It was a very gory scenario. It was when we got there that we called the police from Biase Division who came and rushed the three survivors to the hospital in Ugep.

“But when I called 122, the road safety emergency number for Itigidi, the Federal Road Safety person in Itigidi who took the call claimed there was no fuel in their vehicle to respond to the emergency call. The man who received the call told me there was nothing he could do.”

As at the time of filing this report, the corpses and the affected vehicles were still at the scene of the accident with bewildered residents and villagers gathered around the spot.
