As a result of the heavy down pour in Calabar on Tuesday 7th of October which started at about 6:19am and lasted for several hours, there was serious flood from Murry by Target road to Goldie street which destroyed properties worth millions of Naira.
Some of the affected residents who spoke to CrossRiverWatch said flooding in the area is becoming too regular and enjoined government to take steps to resolve the matter.
Mr. Bayo Achi, a funiture maker said, “The flood here is becoming regular, it has destroyed many of my properties; the wood I stored, uncompleted chairs and foams have all been spoilt.
“There’s a set of 5 chairs and a center table; I was supposed to use those materials for which part payment I used in procuring them but they have been destroyed and the items destroyed are worth 40,000 Naira.
“Last month a similar event occurred and some government staff came here to tell us to do whatever we can to help ourselves not to wait for the government which we did but the job that needs to be done is beyond our reach, only the government can do that. If they are asking us to save ourselves by ourselves then it means the problem has gone above the State Government which means they have to resort for help from a higher authority which is the Federal Government.
“Last year after a similar event, the State Governor Senator Liyel Imoke visited us and promised to take quick action but till now nothing has been done.”
He added that “from all of us that are victims of the flooding I consider myself lucky as compared to the woman selling food next to me because each time it rains like this she ends up losing bags of garri, vegetables and other items which snowballs into economic hardship for her.”
Also, Mrs. Rose Udoh who runs a mini super market said, “My store was filled with water up to the point that I had to run out of it to safety with my son, after it stopped raining all my goods worth almost a hundred thousand Naira were lost and I had to use bucket in packing out the water.”
They both appealed to the State and Federal Government to come to their rescue.
