Seven elders of the Creek Town Community on Thursday warned kidnappers who on the 11th of October 2013 invaded the village to kidnap the father of Mr. Efiok Cobham, the Cross River State Deputy Governor to steer clear of their community.
The elders led by Chief Thomas Mkpang said the kidnappers who invaded their community with Alsatian dogs and sophisticated weapons desecrated the peace of their land which has had civilization since the early 19th century through its contact with Europeans adding that the action of the kidnappers has incurred the wrath of God and the land.
“The action of the kidnappers has incurred the wrath of God and the land; it is a taboo in our culture for a young person to talk rudely to an elder talk much of assaulting him more or less kidnap him which those young people did to Etubom Essien Cobham when they kidnapped him”. Chief Mkpang said.
The elders said the repercussion of the action of the kidnappers is grievous and warned the “persons concerned to desist from such action in future as the wrath of the land is already upon them”.
The elders called for the reestablishment of a police post in the village to beef up the security in the area. “We have organized a vigilante to take care of the security of the community but we also call on the government to also consider it necessary to re-establish the police station at the Creek Town as well as the Marine Police Security post.”
It will be recalled that on the 11th of October, the peace of Creek Town Community was shattered when armed men invaded the area to kidnap Etubom Essien Cobham, a retired security man with the Calabar Municipality who was only released after an undisclosed ransom was allegedly paid.
