The Director-General of the National Boundary Commission, Alhaji Mohammed Ahmad has recalled that the commission’s decision to handover the oil rich Bakassi peninsula in Cross River State was a painful one.
Speaking during a two days retreat organized by the Commission in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Capital on the theme “The Imperatives of Cross Border Cooperation in Sub-Regional Integration And National Development”, the DG said the areas in dispute was handed over in the overall interest of the Country.
“Our country was taken to international court for eight years. And after eight years the International Court delivered judgment that was painful to us. But then through the foresight of our leaders, we implemented that judgment” he said.
Ahmad while warning states with boundary issues to follow the laid down law to resolve their differences amicably rather than taken laws into their hands said since he took appointment with the National Boundary Commission, he has been involved in solving boundary issues particularly between Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.
“We came here to have a workshop in ensuring that we have peace in all our inter-state borders.
“We in the National Boundary Commission are charged with the responsibilities of defining the boundaries of the country, determine the borders, resolve boundary disputes between States or constituencies within the Federation and also between the Federation and Sister States.
“Only last month, Nigeria was commended by the United Nations Security Council for her statesmanship in the implementation of the judgment of the International Court of Justice which has become a model on how to handle boundary problems in the world. We have come here to have a workshop to ensure that we have peace in all our borders”, he added.
Earlier during a courtesy call to Governor Godswill Akpabio in his office, he charged Commission to always enthrone the principles of justice and fair play in the discharge of their duty.
