Legislation is underway to facilitate the establishment of a women and children Commission in Cross River State to ensure the continuation of the projects and programs which cater for their needs and welfare.
Mrs. Obioma Imoke, wife of the Cross River State governor, Senator Liyel Imoke stated this in Calabar on Sunday during the closing ceremony of the 2013 Children’s Camp for selected secondary and primary school children in the state.
She said Senator Imoke has directed the Attorney General of the state and Ministry of Social Welfare to produce a legislation which will facilitate the establishment of the commission which is principally for children and women.
“I have a passion for the children and women that is why we have a State Fit for the Child, ASFAC, and Partnership Opportunities for Women Empowerment, POWER, so it is necessary that there is a continuation of these programs to take care of women and children needs in our state”.
Mrs. Imoke asserted that it is not right to bring a child into the world and abandon such child to the world but since that practice is still prevalent it is necessary to put in place projects that would cater for the needs of such unfortunate children because the future of the country lies in the children and “These children should be supported and encouraged in order to bring up a strong generation of children who can truly be said to be the future of Nigeria” she said.
Mrs. Imoke called on parents and everyone in the society to contribute meaningfully and develop the children not minding where they come from or whose children they are because every child has the potential of growing up to become useful and contribute to the growth of society.
She said the industrial action by teachers in the state caused the school year to be extended which made it
impossible to bring children from across the state to participate in the annual camping for 2013 but “we brought in children from the Destiny Children’s Centre to become part of what we are doing and the criteria for selection of those who participated was based on academic excellence and good character.”
She admonished the children to be of good character and to practice what they learnt at the camp because it is only those who excel academically and are of good character that can be awarded the annual scholarship to the Sure Foot American International School.
