The Cross River State Government on Wednesday officially shut down the popular U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar for repairs.
The state Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Mr Patrick Ugbe, said the stadium was closed to members of the public to enable the state government effect necessary repairs.
He said that the repairs were necessary ahead of the 2014 National Sports Festival for which the state had been granted the hosting rights.
Ugbe said that the state government was constructing an ultra-modern indoor sports hall with about 10,000-capacity stadium. He, however, did not disclose the cost of the repairs.
“The stadium will remain shut until the repairs and construction works are completed. It might take up to May. We are really not looking at the cost of the project but will strive to put in place the best infrastructure and facilities at the stadium.”
