The opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, registered over two hundred thousand members in Cross River State during its registration exercise in the state.
A former Nigerian Ambassador to South Korea, Akpang Obi-Odu and a transporter, Umanah Eteyen also joined the party during the membership registration exercise as they registered in their respective polling units in the state.
State Chairman of the party’s Interim Harmonization Committee, Hon. Alex Irek who disclosed this to CrossRiverWatch in Calabar added that many prominent politicians are in talks with the party with a view to crossing over from the PDP.
Irek, who is the minority leader of the Cross River State House of Assembly however said it would be mandatory for defectors especially from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to first tender their resignation letter before they are admitted into the APC.
“In the next three to four weeks we will be going into congresses and the National Convention and a lot of the big fishes are coming shortly after the national convention, but we have made it mandatory that before you cross over to APC, you must first show us your resignation letter from PDP because we don’t want those who would come with the intention of destroying our party and then going back.’’
On who have crossed over during the registration exercise, Irek mentioned “Akpang Obi-Odu, Eteyen of popular Eteyen Motors have crossed over.’’
On whether reports that Ex-Governor Donald Duke and some of his political associates are joining the party is true, he said ‘’I have heard that, but I have not seen them yet; a proposal still in the heart is not actualized until some reasonable actions are taken about it.’’
“We have about 2,283 polling units in the state and averagely we registered 80 persons per polling unit and in some polling units there have exceeded over two booklets, ’’he said.
He declared that the APC has zoned the governorship seat to the Northern Senatorial District of the state in 2015 and dispelled the rumour that the party has no aspirants for the coveted seat but was only waiting for a crack in the PDP before it can take in some of its members to bear its flag for the 2015 governorship race.
According to him ‘’the race is like a relay race where hurdles are scaled. It is not all who started the race earlier than others who always finish or win it.’’
