The Cross River State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has condemned the recent bestial killing of Mr Toyin Obadina, the NewsWatch Editor by unknown gunmen.

A statement signed by Pastor Ndoma Akpet, the State Chairman of the NUJ and made available to CrossRIverWatch, said the condemnation was made during the monthly congress of the Union in Calabar which took place on Wednesday, 12th February, 2014.

According to the statement, the resolution came during a state of the nation address and members charged security agencies to live up to their responsibility of protecting lives and property and most importantly to bring the hoodlums who murdered Mr. Obadina to book.

The union also raised concerns on the carpet crossing and re-crossing by elected officials currently going on in the country and described such action as a distraction that is impeding the growth of democracy in the country.

“Political parties should come up with ideologies and well defined manifestoes to inform the public of their programs rather than embark on a culture of defections aimed at only achieving their selfish goals”.

Once again, the union decried the state of federal roads in the South-South and South East of the country and called on the federal government to take urgent measures to address the situation.
