Members of Post Graduate Students’ Union, Ali Monguno Republic University of Calabar, UNICAL, recently put together an event in Calabar to mark the centenary celebration of Nigeria.
The event was chaired by Kanu Agabi, SAN, former Attorney General of the Federation, who titled his speech as “Nigeria yesterday, today, and tomorrow”.
Mr. Agabi began by praying for the nation saying “I pray for you and our people, May God grant us understanding to know that only by His commandments can this nation prosper, may He grant us patience, foresight, wisdom that by our thought and actions we will ferry this nation into the kingdom of God.
“I do not come to tell you something that you did not know or haven’t heard, I came because out of your goodwill you called me which I solemnly appreciate, this humility of yours is worthy of commendation but however the difficult times there is still hope for Nigeria, Africa and the World.” He said.
He added that “During the military era governors were made to serve in states other than their own and the country was better than now. If you say you came here in the name of post graduate students then why is it that when you leave and get into the office you begin to say I belong to Ohaneze, Arewa, and things like that which ought not to be because God created one man and one world”. He called on members of the Union to continue to be good ambassadors of a worthy course.
The guest speaker Dr. Julius Okputu described Nigeria as a rich poor country, maintaining that “If you hunger for power than service then we will never have free and fair elections”.
The Former Commissioner for Environment went further to say that learning without liberation is useless, “We need to learn not to be copy cats.”
He lamented that “Our problem is that we are not statistically active, any aspect of our leadership that doesn’t aim at employment is useless.” While advising the post graduate students to be of good guide to those behind them and above all play positive roles in making the country a better
place for all and sundry.
Earlier, in his opening remark the President of Ali Monguno Republic Union, Comrade Anthony Bissong Attah said: “We are gathered here today to symbolically mark the centenary celebration of our existence as a people and Nation”. He also expressed gratitude to the participants whom he urged not to relent in keeping education in the front burner of societal discuss describing it as the bedrock.
Comrade Bissong went on to say that “the journey of our nationhood has not been easy, devoid of challenges nor progress. But all glory and honor goes back to God Almighty for making it possible”.
The event featured the launching of their maiden almanac and award presentation to
ten awardees.
