UNICAL Student Floats Online Community For Nigerian Universities

A 300 level student of the department of Computer Science, University of Calabar (UNICAL), Nsikak Edet has floated a community online for university students nationwide to learn, share and interact with each other basically on academic issues.

The website, www.Smartscholaz.com is a platform where students from different universities nationwide converge to discuss issues that border on their academics, departments, faculties and universities amongst other things.

According to the creator “Unlike other online communities, www.smartscholaz.com boasts of cutting-edge user-friendly features that makes it stand out amongst the rest. It has several discussion forums, customized profile page, students’ album (course mates and school), private messaging and categories for users to conveniently create threads, initiate and share posts with multitude of users from different universities. It also offers text-based chat rooms for students to interface and network.

To sign up an account with www.smartscholaz.com, the intended user is required to input his/her name, email address, gender, university, faculty, department, unit or class and an account is created automatically for the user to communicate with other students across Nigerian universities.

Speaking on the sidelines of the website launch, the creator/manager Nsikak Edet said the need for Nigerian students in universities to communicate with each other under one platform anywhere can never be overemphasized.

He said: “I conceived the project idea in 2012 but I maximized the 2013 six months Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) nationwide industrial action to fully develop and float it. Smartscholaz attempts to bring students irrespective of their university affiliation under one platform online to discuss issues peculiar to their sundry institutions of learning as well as socially network etc.”

Edet added that the website in the meantime streamline its users-base to students and alumni of universities only but expressed hope to extend a hand of fellowship to polytechnics, colleges of education amongst others in no distant time.
