The Cross River University of Technology, CRUTECH Calabar Campus was agog recently as the newly appointed Vice Chancellor, VC Prof. Anthony Owan-Eno officially took over from predecessor Prof. Effiom Ene-Obong.
The handing over event which took place at the institution’s Senate Chamber had members of the Senate, Faculty Deans, Heads of Departments, Lecturers, Non-Academic Staff and Students’ Union Leaders present.
While speaking at the event, the new Vice Chancellor of CRUTECH, Prof. Anthony Owan-Eno, barely two weeks after assumption of office, described examination malpractice as a menace which has become a canker warm that is eating deep into our educational system.
Prof. Owan-Eno, who is the erstwhile Provost of the Cross River State College of Education, Akamkpa, COEA which recently rusticated over one hundred students of the College for examination malpractice, used the occasion to state that he has no friend in ignoble activities revealing that “One of the victims was my cousin’s son the mother came to my office pleading that he was the only child she had who was going to school and that I should reinstate him back, but as a patriotic Nigerian I declined her plea and told her that her son has committed an offense”. Stating without equivocation that “I don’t care if you are my son or brother when you behave abnormal I will sanction you.”
The out gone Vice Chancellor of the school, Prof. Effiom Ene-Obong, in his handing over remarks expressed gratitude over the level of corporation he enjoyed from staff and students of the institution, adding that his administration had achieved tremendously with the cadre of team who worked assiduously to make sure the institutions’ initial status was upgraded.
On his achievements he said, “Today the Senate of the University has no fewer than 100 Professors and Readers. The professors produced internally today are over 20, with over 30-40 Readers”.
In improving the means of transportation, the erstwhile VC said over the years, with assistance of friends in Abuja, like Cross River citizens in the National Assembly giant steps has been taken to ease the situation.
His word: “Through their (NASS members) assistance we have gotten a lot from special assistance from programs such as the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) amongst others. With that alone we have obtained quite a number of vehicles, we now have about eight to nine buses; each campus now has at least one 18-seater bus, we have a number of equipment which we acquired for our various programs”.
