Fiery lawyer, activist, politician and chieftain of the opposition All Progressives Congress, Barrister Okoi Obono Obla has criticized the party for the irregularities that have marred the nationwide congress of the party.
Angered by the way the congress election was conducted in his native Yakurr local government in Cross River State, Barrister expressed frustration and disgust with the process and concluded that the party may not be the expected alternative after all.
Obla who is also the traditional ruler of his village lamented that the inanities that characterized the ruling PDP have crept into the opposition APC.
“The problems we saw in PDP are now rearing in the APC. Today the Local Government Area Congress in Yakurr LGA of APC was disrupted and marred by massive protest staged by party members who were angered that the process was hijacked by some people that want to impose leaders on the Party.
“The massive protest led to a melee and fighting that disrupted the Congress. The police and other security agents watched in disbelief as members engaged themselves in fisticuffs. Elections materials were snatched and torn into shreds.
“The Returning Officer, Chris Ekpo was accused of handing over election materials to some people that are suspected of planning to hijack the structures of the Party in the Local Government Area. As a result no election of Local Government Area Executive Committee took place in Yakurr. It was an eye opener and a huge disappointment.
“Am at a quagmire! What is the way forward for Nigeria. It is sad! Maybe Nigeria is doomed. Maybe the APC is not the change agent some of us think. Otherwise why would the Party fail to conduct peaceful, free, fair and credible congresses? The entire exercise has been marred by mindless manipulation and chicanery that boggles my mind.” Obla said in a statement.
