The member representing Biase State Constituency and the Chairman, Information Committee in the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon Ngim Okpo says in the tradition of the Biase politics, he is entitled to second term to enable him consolidate and complete the projects and programs he has begun for the betterment of the land and people of Biase.
He told CroosRiverWatch in an interview in Calabar recently that his two predecessors in the House each had two tenures so it is therefore reasonable for him to have the same privilege since he initiated programs and projects which are meant to address the needs of the people he represents.
He said the politics of Biase is often based on negotiation and consensus therefore “I am optimistic that those who are interested in taking over from me will have to wait till I complete my second tenure since it is our culture to allow our representatives to do two terms”.
Answering a question on why the state Assembly seems to be an appendage of the Executive, Hon Ngim Okpo said there is democratic harmony in the state such that the Executive and the legislature function in harmony in order to meet the needs of the people even as there is a clear understanding of the roles of each arm. “We cannot quarrel and expect to achieve results which our people desperately need and above that, our governor, Senator Imoke is passionate about transforming the state and we have to collaborate with him –making law is not about fighting but enacting the right laws to enhance development”.
Hon Okpo said his relationship with the media has been cordial and based on mutual respect which accounts for the smooth flow of information from the Assembly. “I am a young man and most of you in the media are also young and the import of my being the chairman on Information in the House is to ensure that people know what we are doing here and the media has been doing that based on mutual respect and cordial relationship that exists between the House and the press in the state”.
He expressed optimism that the next governor of the state will continue in the footsteps of Senator Imoke whom he says has done well for the state. “There is development going on in all parts of the state and it takes a governor who means well for the people to do that and I expect the next governor to follow these footsteps”.
