A lecturer in the University of Calabar, UNICAL, Dr. Iwat (other names unknown), has been reported shot by unknown gunmen this afternoon at about 2pm in his office in the department of Micro Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science.
It was not immediately clear at press time why Dr. Iwat was shot but several students, some of who just finished their final examinations and staff members of the University confirmed the shooting to CrossRiverWatch and said that Dr. Iwa was found in his office, soaked in the pool of his blood immediately after gun shots were heard from his office.
CrossRiverWatch gathered that he is presently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital in Calabar.
One of the respondents who spoke to CrossRiverWatch said, “Usually, when final exams are just concluded like this, some of the graduating students who have been holding grudges against fellow students or lecturers see it as an opportunity to revenge or take their pound of flesh.
“They assume that because they are departing the school, they can create the chaos and get away with it”.
It will be recalled that one Dr. Akpan, a lecturer in the Political Science department was shot in company of the Vice Chancellor of the University at Big Munch fast food in Calabar immediately after last year’s final examinations.
Attempts to speak to the management of the institution as well as the police are not yet successful as at press time but we will report more details as they come in.
