CrossRiverWatch can authoritatively confirm that Dr. Godwin Iwatt, a lecturer in the University of Calabar, who was shot by suspected cultists in his office on May 6, 2014 is dead.
Dr. Iwatt was confirmed dead about an hour ago at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital where he has been receiving treatment from gunshots he sustained from his assailants who shot him in his office within the university premises.
A confidential source at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital had disclosed to CrossRiverWatch last week that Dr. Iwatt Godwin was brought into our unit, that is the intensive care unit of the hospital on the fateful day at about 3pm.
The source who preferred anonymity also added that he had under gone a surgery and a thoracotomy chest tube was inserted revealing that he was shot once at the left thoracic cavity.
The source said “When he was rushed in, he was in pains the doctor on call was Prof. Etiuma Aniekan who is a specialist and senior doctor at the cardiothoracic unit”.
As at 8pm on Thursday, May 8, 2014, Dr. Iwatt Godwin was said to be responding to treatment but the intensive care unit was still under heavy police presence.
He was said to have given up life about one hour ago after frantic efforts to save his life to no avail.
Efforts to confirm from the police whether anyone has been arrested in connection with his shooting were not successful as calls to the telephone number of the state police spokesman did not connect.
