Three times All Africa Games medalist, Chika Chukwumerije says he has discovered talent in the Cross River State Taekwondo games and with the support of the state government, he will help to train the talents to win the national sports festival championship.

Chukwumerije who was on a working visit to Calabar to see the preparedness of the Taekwondo games ahead of the festival said there is need to focus on grassroots sport.

The board member of the Nigeria Taekwondo federation said there is need to encourage every parent in Cross River State to enrol their children in Taekwondo.

“I want to focus on the grassroot and young people to take over the game because I’m getting toward the peak of my career and there is need to inspire the young ones to build their sporting talents and character to enable them become useful to the society.

“Cross River for me is a home because in 2007 I did my NYSC here and had a wonderful time particularly with the state sport council which I helped to train the youths for 5-6 months.

“Also the clean and green environment help the people leave and think well so I just felt there is need to come back where was home. More so, the National Sport festival is coming to Cross River and these guys need a lot of support because when I pass on knowledge to their coaches and boost their moral they will in-turn pass to the children.

“It’s always good to host and go very far in the games due to home support. We want them to get prepared, we don’t want to hear that it is referees that support them to win so there is need to invest in them with the right equipments and expose them to the right infrastructure.

“This is because we want the best that will represent the country.

“My findings about them is that they are eager to learn fast, I see a lot of white yellow belt, I will encourage every parent in Cross River State to enrol their children in taekwondo; it’s a beautiful game.

“I will come back to do a lot of coaching courses that will encourage the state government to show interest. They have done well but can do more because I can help them to go far and host to win so as to improve Cross River State Taekwondo.” he said.
