Miss Philomina Agweye, the President of National Association of Cross River State Students World Wide has reacted to her arrest and detention on over the weekend by policemen drafted from the Zone Six Police Command by stating that her arrest was illegal and an attempt to ridicule the association.
Miss Philomina told CrossRiverWatch on Tuesday in Calabar that the conflict rocking the association is being inflicted by her former vice president Miss Juliet Manyo who is bent on destabilizing the smooth running of the affairs of the students body for reasons best known to her.
“She took some of her friends and family members on a street protest to the governor’s office asking for the removal of the Special Assistant to the governor on Students Affairs, Mr Hilary Bisong and I the President of NACRISS World Wide was not informed as well as the parliament of NACRISS and Speaker of Parliament and when they got wind of it they invited her and I don’t know what transpired between her and the parliament and she was impeached”.
Miss Philomina said it was the impeachment that led the vice president to accuse her of being behind the action of the parliament. “She is accusing me of being responsible for her plight but I am not a member of parliament and I have been invited many times by the parliament to explain certain issues which I have done. If I had control of the parliament would they have called on me to appear before them?”. She asked rhetorically.
She said not done with that, the former vice president is claiming that she has mismanaged the funds of the association which is meant to smear her image and give her bad reputation before the students and public. “ If I misappropriate the funds of the association they would not allow me rest because before any money is spent from the NACRISS funds, I have to write to the parliament to scrutinize what the money is to be used for before approval is given and when that is done it is a committee that executes the project not me”.
The NACRISS President stated that during her arrest on Saturday, the police said they were acting based on a petition from the vice president that she was impersonating her position and that she should handover the keys of the bus to them so they could give it to the Vice president.
“They said I should handover the key of the bus to them and they would let me go but I knew that it was a trap to give me bad image before the governor of the state who has done so much for the students of this state so that at the end of the day when the bus disappears I would be accused of appropriating a vehicle given to the association by the government”
She said the vice president is also aggrieved that she refused to share the association’s money meant for projects with her. “She calls it sharing formula and when I refused to share the money which is meant for projects to enhance the welfare of the students with her, she became angry carrying the story about that I have misappropriated the association’s money “
Miss Agweye said she has refused to be daunted by the efforts of the former vice president and has gone ahead to initiate projects for the students. “I am today distributing one hundred bathing buckets, one hundred plates, ten carton of noodles to the students of Health Technology in Calabar and very soon I shall distributer same to University of Calabar, Cross River University of Technology and the College of Education Akamkpa”
