24 Year Old Leg Ulcer Patient In Calabar Needs 5 Million For Surgery

Moses Nnamdi Onwukwe, 24, from Umuahi Ikuanu Local Government Area of Abia State, was born like every other child into this world, with high expectations and looking up to a brighter future of becoming an accountant after graduation from tertiary institution. Perhaps, his dreams were cut short after he sustained an accident which had made him handicapped degenerating to leg ulcer.

Moses travail started in February 16, 2004 at about 7PM when he got involved in a domestic fire accident in his resident and is now seeking help from well meaningful Nigerians to assist him with five hundred thousand to enable him undergo a surgery on his right leg with a condition that he claimed has been diagnosed as leg ulcer at the National Hospital in Abuja.

According to Onwukwe, on that fateful day, he was busy at home with his Aunt in Aba, Abia state when his aunt sent her daughter to buy kerosene from a peddler in the black market. “When she put the adulterated kerosene in the lamp and lit it, it exploded and he suffered burns in the leg. I was discharged with wounds still all over my body because there was no money to further the treatment”.

Nnamdi who is a secondary school dropout said after nine years precisely in 2013, he went to Abuja in search of treatment after he had been to several churches because the wounds kept expanding despite all efforts made by him to salvage the situation but to no avail. According to him, “I used to get treatment at home in Aba from a nurse but things didn`t work out well as envisaged and then I now decided to come to Calabar, Cross River state for medical checkup at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital because I thought I could get help over here since I always here that their medical facility over here are good”

“After tests from the doctors at the National Hospital, they said the wound has degenerated to leg ulcer and I would need to undergo a plastic surgery. They said the procedure would cost 5million naira and there is no where I can raise that kind of money from except from the general public. That is why I am appealing to the general public to come to my aid as I am living in severe pains that seems to double everyday”.

Onwukwe who stormed the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre in Calabar on Wednesday armed to teeth with pile of files unfolded the files only for journalist to discover that the files were medical reports from various hospitals that he had been to stressing that he is at present residing at the news secretariat in Calabar among beggars and the destitute adding that his Abia state born parents are in Aba, Abia state and do not really have a good source of livelihood to raise the kind of money needed by medical experts to carry out the surgery.

He said the pains are excruciating and that is what he goes through on daily basis. He added that if it takes too long before he undergoes the surgery, the leg may be amputated and this he said would perhaps make the medical cost go haywire.

Nnamdi appealed to the government and good people of Abia state through the Head of Service but no response or help had come to that effect. “I am appealing to the good people of Nigeria, my leaders in political and non-political class to assist me financially. Governmental and non-governmental organizations, church and corporate bodies public spirited individuals, to come to my aid as the pains is becoming unbearable”.
