An attempt by the Cross River State Government to ensure that Public and Private Schools in the State are reopened today following the Federal Government directive has met with failure and strong resistance from the Nigeria Union of Teacher (NUT) in the State.
As early as 7.00am this morning, the NUT led by its Chairman, Comrade Eyo-Nsa Itam went round public/private schools in Calabar to enforce the no resumption order by the NUT at the National level.
The NUT Chairman explained that the union will not allow teachers to resume until all the necessary preventive measures for both teachers and pupils/students are provided to prevent them from contacting the dreaded Ebola virus.
Comrade Eyo Nsa Itam in an interview with CrossRiverWatch this morning said, “In line with the directive of the National Secretariat of NUT, we have commenced an indefinite strike in Cross River State from today September 22nd, 2014.
“Our government is not ready at all for this resumption, the commissioner for education is just announcing to the world what is not in existence here.
“There was not training here, they only gave bucket to each of the participants they said they trained.
“Where are the thermometers? Where is running water in our schools? Where are the modern toilets? Those things are not provided by the government in both public primary and secondary schools in the state.
“We will not resume until all these items are provided in line with the directive of the national secretariat of the Union.”
Teachers and students who had prepared and gone to school were driven back by the NUT enforcement team, as some teachers who spoke with CrossRiverWatch, but would not want their names mentioned for fear of victimization revealed that contrary to what was expected, at the wash hand basin where both teachers and students are to wash their hands, it is just morning rose detergent and not any real disinfectant or sanitizer.
