Following the violence that rocked the election of the Students Union Government Executives in the University of Calabar last month, the school has announced that it is now set to re-conduct the botched election, but this time, online.
Briefing the students at the first ever town hall meeting of the University, the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Eyong Ubana, told the students that the University has put everything in place to conduct e-voting for the SUG election. He said the measure will minimize stress for the students.
Voting in the election which has been fixed for the 30th of September, 2014 will be done online.
Prof. Eyong also added that only students who have paid their fees will be eligible to vote and as such students will be sent the security code that will be used to access the site for voting a night to the election. He advised students to keep the code safe and secured as the code can only be used once to access the site.
Also speaking, the chairman of the Calabar University Electoral commission CUECO, Dr. N Igiri assured students of a free and fair elections.
He said that e-voting was the only option left for the University to avoid the post election acrimony that trailed the exercise the last time, which led to three students been shot.
He pleaded with the students to give him and his members the maximum cooperation to deliver.
Reacting, some of the students saw the development as an improvement a means of checking irregularities that may result to acrimony while others said it’s an avenue for the school management to install whoever they prefer as the SUG President.
