The northern caucus of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP will tonight meet with the State Governor and leader of the party in the State, Senator Liyel Imoke to summit results of the screening and consultations that they have had with the aspirants in the 2015 general elections.
Since the zoning of the governorship position to the northern senatorial district of the state, attention has been understandably focused on the northern PDP caucus because it is generally assumed that they hold the ace in deciding who becomes the party’s governorship flag bearer in 2015, if there is no interference with the process from Abuja.
The governor is said to have earlier met with the caucus members from the Southern and Central Senatorial Districts who have already submitted the results of their own screening to him. The meeting with the northern caucus is expected to begin by 9pm at the Peregrino House tonight.
A member of the caucus who is already in Calabar for the meeting told CrossRiverWatch that “We have finished the work we were commissioned by His Excellency and our great party to do. We have also made our independent judgment and I must say that our judgment was not influenced by anybody. All members were free to make their judgment based on what they saw and heard during the several meetings that took place. We have come to submit those results to the governor who is our leader to transmit to the party.”
The member who did not want to be named said the results will assist the governor and the party in streamlining the number of aspirants, particularly for the governorship race to three or five in preparation for the November 29 primaries.
He gave the indication that effort by the caucus to get a consensus candidate were not successful and the way forward is to get a small number from the pack and get them ready for the primaries.
