Imoke Calls For State Police

Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State says the size of the Nigeria Police Force was too huge for one Inspector General to manage effectively and efficiently.

He said many developed countries no longer allow their police systems to be controlled by one central authority.
Speaking in Calabar, Imoke said that states and local government areas should be given the freedom to establish and fund their own independent police systems for the purpose of effective policing of their localities.

He also added that corruption could be reduced drastically when states fund their police force.

“One Inspector General of Police cannot effectively manage the police system in Nigeria. Federal government, too, should begin to decentralize powers of the police force, so that states and even local government areas can have their own police systems.

“In many modern countries, there are different levels of police organizations which are not answerable to the central authorities.

“You find that when states operate their own police, they will recruit locals who know the terrain well whereas strangers would have to spend years to study and adapt. And this is not good for security and policing,” he said.
