The PDP flag bearer for Cross River Southern Senatorial District, Mr. Gershom Bassey has expressed confidence that the PDP led government in Cross River State has put all necessary apparatus in motion to bring to book the gunmen who attacked his home last Friday.
It will be recalled that unknown gunmen visited the Calabar home of the politician on Friday and attempted to force their way into the home. Police men or guard were said to have resisted the gunmen who shot and injured two of the police guards who are now responding to medical treatment.
The assailants who did not meet the politician at home were said to have escaped in a waiting vehicle but in a statement signed by Mr. Gershom Bassey himself and made available to CrossRiverWatch, he condemned the attacked and expressed confidence that the attackers will be brought to book.
Part of the statement reads: “While condemning this needless and unprovoked act of extreme political violence, I wish to call on all my supporters across the Cross River State Southern Senatorial District and all PDP party faithfuls to remain calm, vigilant and shun all perpetrators of political violence.
“Let me use this medium to assure the wider public that I have every confidence that the PDP led government in Cross River State has put all necessary apparatus in motion to ensure that no stone is left unturned in bringing the perpetrators of this action and their sponsors to book. Indeed, I have also received assurances from our government that all necessary measures to safeguard voters from any act of violence or intimidation on election day are fully in place. I therefore encourage Cross Riverians to come out en mass and vote in all the forth coming elections.”
Mr. Bassey said the attack on him was indicative of the commitment of the people of Cross River State to PDP and called on those who have decamped to the opposition to return to the PDP.
“This cowardly act is a clear indication that these characters know that the people of the Southern Senatorial District and indeed the whole of Cross River State are irrevocably committed to the PDP, because the PDP has been faithful over the past 15years. It is a further indicator that PDP is on the path to victory hence the desperate resort to extreme bloodletting.
“I call on all peace loving people of our State to continue to embrace the peace for which our dear State is known and resist attempts by any frustrated political actor, group or individual to lure our young ones to violence.
“In the spirit of accommodation, I hereby extend a hand of fellowship to all those who wish to return to the PDP fold. I urge them to abandon the obviously broken down and sinking ship of opposition politics and join the dynamic, vibrant and winning team of the PDP.” The statement concluded.
