The University of Calabar Town Hall meeting that was scheduled to hold last Friday has been posponed indefinitely.
Our correspondent who went to the venue of the much publicized event which was scheduled to begin by 12noon saw the place empty, with members of the school authority including the Vice Chancellor seated and some members of the Students’ Union Government hanging around, a situation which some respondents decribed as an embarrasment on the Vice Chancelor of the school, Prof. James Epoke.
The SUG President, Mr. Ajang Emmanuel attributed the complete absence of students to the PDP Presidential rally holding which held in the state on Friday. According to him, no fewer than 5,000 UNICAL students were already in the stadium awaiting the President.
Also speaking, the deputy senate President of the SUG, Victor Egomo added that the students preffered going to the stadium for the PDP campaign because at the end of the campaign, “the PDP will share the money”.
Another member of the SUG who also spoke to CrossRiverWatch said: “The town hall meeting is for students, and you know it is only the politically concious ones who love coming to this type of events, and they have all been mobilized for the PDP Presidential rally that is holding at the stadium.”
The town hall meeting was organised to serve as a platform for thrashing out lingering issues between management and students.
