A total of 8, 180 graduands have been passed out by the University of Calabar in its 28th convocation ceremony held at the Abraham Ordia stadium, UNICAL, Saturday. Out of this number, 6,823 are First Degrees, 940 higher degrees and 417 Diplomas.
The Vice Chancellor., University of Calabar, Prof. James Epoke who disclosed this in his convocation address explained that the University had 10 first class, 771 second class upper, 4,154 second class lower and 1,759 third class division, and that the first degree results in this convocation stand out as one of the best since the inception of his administration.
The VC disclosed that 40 years ago, 120 students of University of Nigeria Nsukka were shipped across the Cross River to the historic city of Calabar and settled at Duke Town Secondary school, and that the Senate of UNICAL has therefore officially approved the second week of March of every year as the University of Calabar Founders Day and the second Saturday of March of each year for Convocation ceremonies.
He explained that for the first time, in history, UNICAL participated in the World University Championship in Malaysia and came up among the 50 best out of 900 universities that were in the contest, that in the recent leadership competition, UNICAL came third out of the best five selected to go to United Kingdom for leadership training later this year, while the school took 1st, 3rd and 5th positions out of 300 contestants.
